Ben Smith

Growing up in Northamptonshire, Ben started off his banding with his parents in the local Harborough Band on percussion. Ben spent 2 years at Harborough as the only percussionist before moving on to Foresters Brass 2000 for another 2 years. He then joined the The GUS Band at the age of 15. Ben started his brass playing on Cornet at the age of 7 but gave this up to focus on percussion. But he returned to Brass when he started playing the Euphonium at the age of 11 and he developed quickly, becoming Principal Euphonium for the Northamptonshire County Training Brass Band under the direction of Gary Fountain. Ben progressed into the award winning County Youth Brass Band and became Principal Euphonium in his 2nd year with the band.

In the May before joining the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Ben rejoined Foresters Brass as the Principal Euphonium, under the direction of John Davis. Ben has also been a member of the European Championship winning Youth Brass 2000, spending periods on Principal Euphonium along with a stint as Principal Percussionist and a tour with the band on Trombone.

Ben is now in his 3rd year at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, enjoying his tuition under Matthew White. In January 2020, Ben was invited to join the Grimethorpe Colliery Band on 2nd Euphonium, and is enjoying working with Adam Bokaris under the direction of fellow Euphonium player Dr. David Thornton.
